Association between Antimicrobial Resistance and Biofilm Formation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa Isolated from Urinary Tract Infections

Afrah Obaid Salman

Abstract :

Background

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an important opportunistic pathogen associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs), particularly in healthcare settings, and is characterized by a high capacity for antimicrobial resistance. Its ability to form biofilms may enhance bacterial persistence within the urinary tract and reduce susceptibility to antimicrobial therapy. Molecular characterization of biofilm- and antimicrobial resistance-associated genes may provide additional information about the pathogenic and adaptive characteristics of clinical P. aeruginosa isolates.

Objectives

This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and biofilm-forming capacity of P. aeruginosa isolates recovered from patients with UTIs, assess the association between biofilm formation and antimicrobial resistance, and detect selected biofilm- and resistance-associated genes, including lasR, pelA, and mexA, using conventional PCR.
