Abstract :
Terminological studies and the science of terminology occupy a prominent place in modern and contemporary linguistic scholarship, particularly within the humanities and the natural sciences at large. Such studies have increasingly sought to uncover the realities of terms across diverse fields—tracing, on one hand, the processes of coinage, systematization, and generation, and, on the other, the processes of derivation, arabization, transfer, and translation—until this discipline became an inseparable part of the individual’s daily life.
The book Terminology Science: Principles and Techniques serves as an introduction to the fundamental principles and the techniques required for describing terms in specialized dictionaries (lexicons). It addresses, in a pedagogical manner, the numerous problems raised within the science of terminology, illustrating them through examples drawn from concrete reality. The book further sheds light on the contemporary context in which the practice of terminology-making occurs—namely, the reliance on information technology tools and techniques in the compilation of dictionaries and the production of terms.
This study examines the most significant areas of terminological engagement addressed in the book. The first section focuses on the methodology and terminological approach adopted in the book. The second section deals with the concept of the term and the computer-assisted (informatized) industry as presented in the book. The third section then interprets the pathways of transformation and operation, and the study concludes with an examination of the terminological industry as treated in the book.
